A Destructive and Deadly Social Disease

Addiction is a debilitating disease that affects one in five people. And, it can affect anyone - it doesn't differentiate age, race, income level, occupation, or any other factor. Clients are young and old, white and black, rich and poor, employed and unemployed. They are lawyers, doctors, athletes, housewives, construction workers and homeless people.

In 2002, more than 600,000 Canadians were dependent on alcohol and nearly 200,000 on illicit drugs. In Alberta, the prevalence of alcohol dependency alone is 3.5% of the adult population aged 15 and over - higher than the 2.6% national rate. 95% of substance abusers are in the family unit, the office and the community
